Is it possible to lose weight with vitamins? Well according to more recent studies the answer is yes you can achieve weight loss with vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals play a role in weight loss and weight management. However, this doesn’t mean that you can stuff yourself with 10 Big Macs every day and think “well I’m eating those supplements every day so now I can eat whatever I like”. In the best of worlds this might be great but it’s a bit more complex than that.
What is it that determines a persons weight?
People’s weight is determined by different factors:
- Genetic background
- Eating habits
- Metabolic rate
- A persons general activity level
Genes influence body weight by setting basic parameters on the body’s metabolic efficiency. Metabolic efficiency is how effective the body burns calories. Eating habits is the types and amounts of food consumed. Metabolic rate is largely determined by how active a person is, activity increases muscle mass which increases the metabolism making it easier to lose weight. The general activity level a person has is the amount of energy a person expends in physical activity. The more physical activity you have the better your metabolism will be and therefor easier to lose weight.
How can vitamins and minerals help you with weight loss?
Many of us have nutrient needs that aren’t fulfilled with our natural diet. When we restore these deficiencies with the right vitamins and minerals, in proper doses, then we can satisfy our body’s nutritional cravings and reduce our unhealthy eating habits. When a person begins to take the right vitamins for their individual needs they are able to eat less while making better food choices and find that they have more energy to exercise and plan meals. Last but not least it will make you sleep better which also helps with weight control.
These vitamins and minerals are known for helping with weight loss:
Iodine is a mineral that the body needs to produce thyroid hormones. These hormones control the body’s metabolism and having a good metabolism is essential for weight loss and weight management. For those with an under active thyroid, weight management can be challenging and therefor taking Iodine supplement is a necessity. It is important to not take too much Iodine as that could instead inflame your thyroid. The recommended amount of Iodine daily is 150 mcg.
Despite it’s name, vitamin D is not a vitamin, but a prohormone. Vitamin D is important for many reasons but especially if you want to lose weight. When you have a deficiency in vitamin D, your body will turn sugar to fat instead of energy. Vitamin D levels are often lower in overweight individuals as well as those who are physically inactive and this deficiency is a common cause of obesity and metabolic syndrome. We can get vitamin D naturally from the sun but most of us don’t get enough sunlight to have the sufficient levels of vitamin D that we need.
Iron is a mineral needed by the body for healthy growth, development and metabolism. Iron is also essential in carrying oxygen in red blood cells. If a person has low iron levels they may not get enough oxygen to their muscles. Muscles that are low on oxygen cannot burn fat for energy as well as they should. Low Iron levels also makes the body’s metabolism not function properly. Women are at higher risk for iron deficiency due to their menstruation. Iron deficiency makes it much more difficult to lose weight.
Magnesium is a mineral which relaxes your muscles, help you feel calm, improves your sleep and is responsible for the chemical reactions in your body that produces energy. A lack of sleep is a key factor to weight gain. Sleep disorders is listed as one of the causes to obesity. For those who suffer from insomnia, low levels of magnesium are often found in their bodies. Magnesium plays a significant role in supporting deep, restorative sleep. Without magnesium the chemical reactions that produce energy cannot happen therefor magnesium is vital for our bodies metabolism and energy production
There are of course more vitamins and minerals and other supplements that can aid you in achieving weight loss, I will add these later to this post, but these that I have mentioned above are probably the most essential ones. It’s hard to know by heart which deficiency you might have that makes it hard for you to lose weight or control your weight and the best thing you can do is either to go and see a doctor and let him/her check your blood levels or you can try the supplements mentioned above to see if that might help you. Thank your for reading this post and if you have any comments or questions don’t hesitate to write them below. Take care for now and I wish you all the best.
